Tile Coasters

Does your counter get overrun with cups? When my kids were small, we went through a lot of cups every day.   I would constantly remind my kids which cup they had and where to put them.  We would end up with cups all over the counter and nobody could remember which cup was theirs. After seeing a few ideas on Pinterest, I decided to make tile coasters for my family a few years ago.  Everyone in the family has a tile and placed it in a special spot in the kitchen.  We have had these tiles for over 5 years, and they work wonders keeping cups off the counter.  This is an easy craft that you can complete fairly quickly, and it will make a big difference in your kitchen (and save your sanity 🙂 ).

Supplies:

Tiles-I bought a 9 pack of tiles for $3.97 at Home Depot.  I couldn’t find cheaper ones, but I liked these better anyway and it worked out to $0.44 a tile.

Scrapbook paper-I used a heavier double-sided paper so the paper wouldn’t wrinkle

Mod Podge

Ruler, Trimmer, Scissors

Felt

My first step was to cut a 3 1/2 inch square of paper for each tile.  I wanted each block to be different, but you could do a matching set or use photos.  I used my Cricut to cut 2 3/4 in. letters of cardstock for each person’s initials.  For this task, I used the Alphalicious cartridge and I had the short shadow feature on.  I laid everything out on the tiles before I started gluing anything down.

Next, I spread a layer of Mod Podge on the tile with a paint brush and glued the paper down.  I let it dry for a few minutes, and then did another layer to glue the letter to the paper.

You can see the Mod Podge in the photo, but it does dry clear.  After a few minutes, cover the top with two more layers of Mod Podge.  Let it dry between each layer.

I let mine dry for about an hour.  When they were ready, I turned them over and used rubber cement to glue felt to the bottom.  I did this step because I didn’t want the tiles to scratch my granite countertops.

I let them dry for about 20 more minutes before I turned them back over.

For the most part, the kids have been great about putting their cups back on the tiles.  Their cups get washed every night when I run the dishwasher, so they have a fresh cup each day.  The mod podge sealed the tiles well and they have held up pretty good over the past 5 years.
